3D printing technology is increasingly used in flow analysis, to develop low cost and tailor-made devices. The possibility of grafting specific molecules onto 3D printed parts offers new perspectives for the development of flow systems. In this study, a MPFS system including a dicarboxylate 1,5-diphenyl-3-thiocarbazone grafted 3D-printed device has been developed for mercury determination. For this purpose, the surface of 3D-printed cuboids was first modified with amine functional groups and then grafted with dicarboxylate 1,5-diphenyl-3-thiocarbazone. This new grafted device resulted in selective mercury preconcentration with extraction and elution yields higher than 90% even at high sampling flow rates. The detection can then be carried out in two ways:...

The Loire River is one of the largest river systems in Western Europe and a major source of continental inputs to the marine environment in the Bay of Biscay. Its catchment area drains agricultural and industrial zones and its estuary is increasingly urbanized. Even if the Loire River is not considered as a highly polluted system, studies have shown estuarine Pb contamination due to industrial inputs and combustion of leaded gasoline until the mid 1990’s. A retrospective study, based on the analysis (Pb levels and isotopic composition) of mussel samples collected by the French mussel watch program (RNO/ROCCH) has highlighted this contamination and its trend between 1985-2005 (Couture et al., 2010). This poster furthers the work initiated by Couture et al....

Oligotrophy as a major driver of mercury bioaccumulation in medium-to high-trophic level consumers: A marine ecosystem-comparative study ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Cresson, Pierre; Bouchoucha, Marc; Brach-papa, Christophe; Bustamante, Paco; Crochet, Sylvette; Marco-miralles, Francoise; Thomas, Bastien; Knoery, Joel.
Mercury (Hg) is a global contaminant of environmental concern. Numerous factors influencing its bioaccumulation in marine organisms have already been described at both individual and species levels (e.g., size or age, habitat, trophic level). However, few studies have compared the trophic characteristics of ecosystems to explain underlying mechanisms of differences in Hg bioaccumulation and biomagnification among food webs and systems. The present study aimed at investigating the potential primary role of the trophic status of systems on Hg bioaccumulation and biomagnification in temperate marine food webs, as shown by their medium-to high-trophic level consumers. It used data from samples collected at the shelf-edge (i.e. offshore organisms) in two...

Particles transformation in estuaries: Fe, Mn and REE signatures through the Loire Estuary ArchiMer
Thibault De Chanvalon, A.; Metzger, E.; Mouret, A.; Knoery, Joel; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Brach-papa, Christophe.
During their transfer across estuaries, particles endure numerous cycles of deposition-resuspension accompanied by several redox oscillations. These oscillations are likely to modify the particles content of redox sensitive metals such as Fe, Mn and two rare earth elements (REE): Ce and Eu. The present paper focuses on the fate of particles originating from the Loire Estuary by the study of chemical composition changes of both total and ascorbate-extracted phases. Transformations of particles buried in the sediment are estimated from sediment cores sampled in an estuarine intertidal mudflat Changes affecting particles that are transferred to the ocean are evaluated by comparing the composition of suspended particulate matter (SPM) from riverine time series...

Patterns of trace metal bioaccumulation and trophic transfer in a phytoplankton-zooplankton-small pelagic fish marine food web ArchiMer
Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Strady, Emilie; Harmelin-vivien, Mireille; Radakovitch, Olivier; Brach-papa, Christophe; Crochet, Sylvette; Knoery, Joel; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Thomas, Bastien; Tronczynski, Jacek; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois.
Trace metal contamination in the European sardine and anchovy food web was investigated in the Gulf of Lions, NW Mediterranean Sea, including seawater and size fractions of plankton. The results highlighted: i) higher and more variable concentrations in the smaller plankton size classes for all metals except cadmium; ii) higher concentrations in anchovy versus sardine for all elements except lead; iii) different patterns of metal bioaccumulation through the food web: cobalt, nickel, copper, silver, lead and zinc displayed continuously decreasing concentrations (with the exception of increased zinc in fish only), while mercury concentrations dropped considerably in larger plankton size classes and rose significantly in fish. Lastly, cadmium concentrations...

Platinum (Pt) is considered a Technology Critical Element (TCE) and an emerging metallic contaminant with increasing release into the environment. Gaps in knowledge and understanding of environmental levels, fate and effects of Pt still exist, especially in the marine environment. This work presents Pt concentrations in the northwestern Mediterranean coast including: (i) temporal variability from sediment cores and farmed mussels in the Toulon Bay (historically affected by intense human activities) and (ii) spatial distribution from recent wild mussels collected along ∼ 300 km coastline with contrasting ecosystems (including natural reserves), quantified using voltammetry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The historical (> 100 years)...

Spatial and temporal distribution of mercury and methylmercury in bivalves from the French coastline ArchiMer
Briant, Nicolas; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Martinez, Laura; Brach-papa, Christophe; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Savoye, N.; Sonke, J.; Knoery, Joel.
Marine mercury (Hg) concentrations have been monitored in the French coastline for the last half a century using bivalves. The analyses presented in this study concerned 192 samples of bivalves (mussels: Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters: Crassostrea gigas and Isognomon alatus) from 77 sampling stations along the French coast and in the French Antilles sea. The goals of this study were to assess MeHg levels in various common bivalves from French coastline, and to identify possible geographic, taxonomic or temporal variations of concentrations. We show that the evolution of methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations covary with total mercury (HgT) concentrations. Moreover, in most of the study sites, HgT concentrations have not decreased...

TOPHYPAC. Tolérance des communautés phytoplanctoniques aux phytosanitaires dans le panache de la Charente. Programme Évaluation et réduction des risques liés à l’utilisation des Pesticides ArchiMer
Stachowski-haberkorn, Sabine; Guesdon, Stephane; Bechemin, Christian; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Brach-papa, Christophe; Soudant, Philippe; Beker, Beatriz; Jadas-hécart, Alain.
TOPHYPAC is a field study that was conducted in the Charente river estuary (Marennes-Oléron bay). The main goal was to assess the possible impact of chemical contamination with copper and pesticides on phytoplankton communities. Physical, chemical (nutrients, metals and pesticides) and biological (phytoplankton community) parameters were monitored in the field during three years, from 2011 to 2014. In 2012 and 2013, field sampling was coupled with experimental exposure of phytoplankton communities to copper and to an herbicide cocktail, after transportation to the lab: the effects were assessed using photosynthesis endpoint and cellular densities. TOPHYPAC allowed to set the framework of Charente estuary contamination with pesticides: herbicides glyphosate...

Trace metal concentrations in the muscle of seven marine species: Comparison between the Gulf of Lions (North-West Mediterranean Sea) and the Bay of Biscay (North-East Atlantic Ocean) ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine; Cresson, Pierre; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Bustamante, Paco; Brach-papa, Christophe; Bruzac, Sandrine; Rozuel, Emmanuelle; Bouchoucha, Marc.
Concentrations of 6 trace metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the muscle of 2 sharks (Galeus melastomus and Scyliorhinus canicula), 4 teleosts (Helicolenus dactylopterus, Lepidorhombus boscii, Micromesistius poutassou and Phycis blennoides) and 1 crustacean (Nephrops norvegicus) were compared between the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea). Although average concentrations and the trace element pollution index were generally higher in the Gulf of Lions, significant differences between the two ecosystems were only found for Zn for Helicolenus dactylopterus, and for Ag and Cu for the crustacean N. norvegicus. Moreover, some relationships between trophic level or size and metal concentrations were found for these two...
